The Concept was brought up to Sri Lanka through the Swedish Based charity organization called “Sri Lankas Barns Vanner – S.L.B.V.” (Swedish Friends of Children in Sri Lanka – S.F.C.S.L.) And this organization is the legally authorized organization to implement and administrate the Star for Life concept in Sri Lanka.
The fist SFL Sri Lanka project was implemented in Southern Province of Sri Lanka at SP/MR/Palatuwa Gunarathana Central College in Matara district with approval from the Provincial Department of Education in Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The local implementing partner for this initial project was ‘Institute for Development of Community Strengths’ (INDECOS), which is one of the well-established local NGOs in Matara District.
After three years of project duration, this pilot project was completed by end of 2011 with many positive outcomes. In 2012, planning for launching Star for Life Sri Lanka second school was also started in Matara District joined hand with the same local partner ‘INDECOS’ and identified school was “SP/MR/President’s College” at Fort, Matara. This project was officially launched in 2013. However, due to lack of support from school management and failure to progress as expected by the Star for Life organization and funding partner, this project was closed down by end of 2013.
In the meanwhile in 2013, the ‘Star for Life Sri Lanka’ project was implemented for the first time in Western Province of Sri Lanka as the third project implemented in the country. The selected school was WP/KE/Kelani Maha Vidyalaya (Kelani College) and the Funding Sponsor was Trelleborg AB in Sweden. This project was initiated by “Learning for Life-S.F.C.S.L.” a locally registered NGO in Western Province of Sri Lanka with necessary legal approval from the Provincial Department of Education – Western Province.
Since 2013, the ‘Learning for Life-S.F.C.S.L.’ is granted the legal authority to implement and administrate the Star for Life concept in Sri Lanka.
The third SFL project in Sri Lanka was officially launched on 25th January 2014 with presence of many local, Swedish and South African guests. At the moment this is the only existing project of Star for Life Sri Lanka programme. And based on the discussions held among the Directors of Ministry/Department of Education in Sri Lanka, Management of Star for Life Sri Lanka and prospective Funders regarding the possible expansion of the programme; the Star for Life Sri Lanka programme will hopefully be expanded to another school in Western Province in 2016.
